“Behind the Screen” – on the Social Impact of Online Violence and Abuse

Last night, on October 8, 2025, the forum theatre performance “Behind the Screen” premiered at “Xhevdet Doda” Gymnasium in Prishtina, with dramaturgy and direction by Zana Hoxha.

The story unfolded within university life — a microcosm where students, through the characters Krenar, Dafina, Lea, Ardi, and Professor Drita, confronted the pressures of a world shaped by images, likes, and videos that impose toxic models of love, power, and desire.

Through the interactive format of Forum Theatre, the narratives sparked lively discussion between the characters and the audience. The students’ energy was palpable — direct reactions, concrete questions, and honest engagement with characters representing real-life figures. The audience were not merely spectators; they became active participants in exploring the meaning of violence and manipulation, exposing the true face of abusers and standing in solidarity with victims.

The discussion highlighted some of the deepest wounds of our digital society: normalized sexual harassment through screens, the profound and far-reaching impact of online violence on real lives, the power of artificial intelligence when misused, the subtle forms of manipulation and control in relationships disguised as “care,” and the fear and complexity involved in reporting, especially when the abuser is someone close. “Behind the Screen” served precisely to expose control, violence, and manipulation.

Three students from “Xhevdet Doda” Gymnasium became part of the performance, reenacting scenes and reshaping the narrative. This moment demonstrated the power of Forum Theatre, highly valued by young people as a tool for education and raising awareness, offering the possibility of immediate transformation — not only on stage but also in the consciousness of those experiencing it.

“Behind the Screen” did not provide easy answers, but delivered a clear call for courage — the courage to report and challenge every form of violence and oppression. It was a reflection on ethical responsibility in the age of algorithms and influencers, a reminder that consciousness remains humanity’s highest form of resistance.

The performance was brought to life by actors Ismail Kasumi, Qendresa Kajtazi, Anisa Ismaili, Edlir Gashi, and Albana Gashi.

This activity was organized by Artpolis, with the support of the Kosovo Women’s Network and East West Management Institute.
