On February 11, 2026, the rerun of the play “Woyzeck” was presented in Gjakova as part of the program “Gjakova Celebrates Independence”, transforming the festive occasion into a space for reflection through performing arts. This co-production between “Hadi Shehu” Theatre and Artpolis offered a contemporary interpretation of Georg Büchner’s classic work, adapted by playwright Jack Thorne and staged by director Zana Hoxha.

In this version, the individual tragedy of Woyzeck becomes a broader social mirror: losing control over one’s life becomes an unavoidable reality for the protagonist. Woyzeck is not just an ordinary soldier or a subject of a cruel experiment; he embodies the individual crushed by a system that leaves no way out. The stage, designed by Grace Rumsey, creates a cold and harsh environment, where Woyzeck’s inner darkness is reflected in the set and lighting, enhancing the suffocating atmosphere and the psychological depth of the character.

Hoxha’s direction reveals the tragic power of a person lost in a world that oppresses and exploits them, while the audience is confronted with the realities of systematic violence and social injustice. Woyzeck gives voice to the silenced individual, challenging the audience to reflect on human fate, the societal structures that constrain us, and our responsibility to look beyond the stage.

With an intense performance by the cast and a rich theatrical language, “Woyzeck” is more than a drama—it is a powerful call for reflection on injustice and the ways our society continues to produce silent victims, reminding us of the importance of dialogue and collective awareness.

Woyzeck is a co-production of “Hadi Shehu” Theatre and Artpolis, supported by the Municipality of Gjakovë and Frieda.
