The theatre performance “Starting from Zero”, presented by the Theatre Club in Lipjan on May 12, 2026, created a space for reflection, dialogue, and hope for the participating youth and the audience alike.
The performance explored the choices that shape our lives, social prejudice, and the burden of the past, placing at its core the possibility of personal transformation and the chance to begin again.
Built upon the reflections and experiences of the young participants themselves, “Starting from Zero” was the result of a long creative process that offered them a safe space to express themselves freely, speak openly about their challenges, and discover the artistic potential within them. Throughout the process, guided by mentors Ismail Kasumi and Rabije Kryeziu, the participants developed important life skills such as communication, teamwork, self-confidence, discipline, responsibility, and critical thinking—skills that extend far beyond the stage and directly influence how they perceive their future.
The performance was attended by around 100 people and sparked strong emotional reactions from the audience. One of the social workers described the activity as extremely important, emphasizing that:
“What I appreciated most was the expression of the young participants’ talent, and we truly witnessed it. But what was even more meaningful was the message they delivered—how they can move beyond the past and become valuable members of society.”
Another social worker highlighted the therapeutic role of art for the young participants, stating:
“Through art, they expressed their inner lives and their vision for the future, showing how they can become successful.”
Young audience members also strongly identified with the message of the performance. One of the young people attending shared that what resonated most deeply was the importance of believing in oneself and pursuing one’s dreams—reflecting the central dilemma explored in the performance: the choice between social pressure and one’s personal path.
Perhaps the most powerful reflection came from the members of the Theatre Club themselves. One participant described the experience as “fantastic,” adding that the artistic process had been not only engaging, but also transformative:
“The message was very important because it made us reflect, avoid making harmful choices, return to life with a new perspective, and become better for society.”
“Starting from Zero” demonstrated the power of art to build bridges of communication and create new opportunities for young people who often face stigma and isolation. Beyond its artistic dimension, the performance became an emancipatory process, where theatre served as a tool for awareness and hope for young people.
The performance was organized by Artpolis in cooperation with the Correctional Center in Lipjan, with the support of Frieda and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
