On Saturday, 14th of October, writer and performance artist, Uresa Ahmeti premiered her performance ‘Break/ing’ at the city park in Prishtina. It was nothing short of a mesmerizing journey through the depths of the human soul, an act of naming one’s oppression, and a poignant testament to the power of art. Through her genre-breaking poetry, dance, and sound, she took us on a rollercoaster ride from experiencing pain to self-realization, empathy, and radical love.
She started by building a knifing atmosphere of isolation and the feeling of being chained, and throughout her performance, with her words and movement, she slowly broke off her shell – a symbol of society’s constraints on marginalized groups. Her movements became faster and freer. Her flow reminded everyone of the capacity of our bodies for joy and resistance.
Tears were witnessed, and weights of the soul were lifted. Everyone left the park that day feeling calmer, emotional, and reflective.
“This performance was a protest against social systems that kill our souls, bodies, and minds every day. I dedicate this performance to the power we hold within to stand up and not remain silent. I feel stronger and lighter after this performance. I love freedom and joy, and I will never settle for less.
This is what the performance was for me: an act of self-love and a gift to my audience to use our moments of breaking as lessons and fuel for change.” shared Uresa.
This performance was supported by the Artpolis Feminist Art Fund, which is supported by the program of the Kosovo Foundation for Civil Society (KCSF) ‘EJA Kosovo’, co-financed by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), Sweden and the Government of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.
