“Celebration of World Book Day”
Nënë Tereza Square, April 23 and 24, 2015
April 23rd is a symbolic day for world literature because on this date, great global writers such as Cervantes, K. Laxness, Vladimir Nabokov, Josep Pla, and Manuel Mejía Vallejo were born and passed away.
This date, chosen by UNESCO’s General Conference in 1995, is dedicated to authors and books from around the world, encouraging everyone, especially young people, to discover the joy of reading and to gain a renewed respect for the invaluable contributions of those who have given so much to the social and cultural development of humanity.
The Center for Arts Development – ARTPOLIS, with the support of the European Union Office in Kosovo through the Culture for All program and project partners, will carry out several activities throughout the day on April 23rd at Nënë Tereza Square and April 24th at Dodona Theatre. These activities aim to promote reading and enhance access to reading-related services for all age groups.
To celebrate Book Day, the following events have been organized: The Book Corner, made possible in collaboration with capital city bookstores and publishing houses, offering hundreds of books at more affordable prices and free registration at the “Hivzi Sylejmani” library; a panel discussion on the topic “Reading and Publishing – Is It Worth It in Kosovo?” featuring poets, representatives of publishing houses, and representatives of the Ministry of Culture, Youth, and Sports; poetry readings and artistic performances for children at Naim Frashëri and Faik Konica elementary schools by well-known actors and poets from the artistic scene; the presentation and awarding of prizes to the five best readers of the “Hivzi Sylejmani” Municipal Library of Pristina; poetry interpretations by various foreign and local authors accompanied by Kosovar instrumentalists; and the organization of the Poetry Night in collaboration with renowned actors from the artistic scene at Dodona Theatre.
