On April 18, 2025, the Theater Club in Ferizaj presented “Juliet and Juliet” a daring reinterpretation of Shakespeare’s classic tragedy “Romeo and Juliet”. This performance was not simply a familiar retelling, but a deep philosophical exploration of love, identity, and rebellion, brought to life by the young talents of Ferizaj.
Set in a café-theater, the production turned the stage into a dynamic space for creative expression. The characters and the performance itself defied not only aesthetic conventions but also the societal norms surrounding love. The intense clash between two directors, each holding completely opposing views on how the play should be staged, sparked a heated debate among an engaged audience of about 90 people.
Orgesa Kçiku, one of the participants from the Theater Club, shared, “We embraced the opportunity to empower young men and women to spread a positive message.” This idea was reflected throughout the performance, emphasizing the importance of equality and the right to love freely, regardless of gender. Arliza Ilazi, another participant, added, “Throughout this performance, we learned many new things, and the message we conveyed is that, regardless of our gender, we all have equal rights.”
The actors—Arliza Ilazi, Daorsa Neretva Sopa, Djellza Musliu, Enea Reka, Erza Musliu, Mariola Rexhepi, Orgesa Jakupaj, Orgesa Kçiku, and Riad Xhafaj—were mentored by renowned actors Kushtrim Qerimi and Dori Xhemajli. Their performances were full of emotion, shedding light on the challenges to stereotypes that often confine individuals.
Mariola Rexhepi emphasized, “With this performance, our goal was to support each other, show empathy, and fight the stereotypes that often surround us.”
Erza Musliu explained, “Through art, I wanted to convey the message that everyone is free to do whatever they want without prejudice and discrimination.”
“Juliet and Juliet” became more than a play—it was a powerful testament to the role of theater as a means for social change and personal empowerment. Its impact extended beyond the stage, inviting the audience to reflect on their own identities and challenge the societal constructs that define them.
This event was organized by Artpolis in collaboration with the “Çesk Zadeja” School of Arts and the “Adriana” Theater, with support from Frieda and the Ministry of Culture.
